When the basic idea for Kafka by the Sea, a full-length novel, came to me, the first thing that went through my head was a story with a fifteen-year-old teenage protagonist. I had no idea how the story would unfold (I always write novels without envisioning how they will unfold), but the idea was to take a teenager and make him a hero.
